  • History of the Plyos Embankment

The history of the embankment in Plyos dates back to the 18th century when Plyos gained city status and began to develop actively as an important trading center on the Volga. The first plans for the improvement of the embankment appeared in 1781 as part of a large-scale urban redevelopment carried out by order of Empress Catherine II. The commission responsible for planning the development also worked on projects for major cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg, so even in the small town of Plyos, innovative ideas reflecting the capital's style and spirit of the time were implemented.

Initially, the embankment was wooden, and only by the mid-19th century did the active construction of stone houses begin, which became an important part of the city's ensemble. The development along the river acquired a unified architectural appearance thanks to the characteristic white plastered walls and the proportionality of the structures. The merchant mansions built at that time defined the appearance of the embankment for many decades to come. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Plyos embankment already had an established historical look, but after the October Revolution, its fate changed dramatically. Many houses were turned into communal apartments or used for economic purposes.

  • Embankment Reconstruction

The residents of Plyos, who have lived by the Volga for centuries, knew well how the river could overflow its banks in spring and flood the Embankment. The waters would rise close to the windows of buildings, and moving around the city became possible only by boat. To avoid damage, bridges at the mouth of the Shokhonka were dismantled during floods, and transportation to Zarechye was carried out via the upper bridge. People regularly prepared for the spring flood: they built icebreakers, removed temporary trading stalls, and monitored the river.

With the start of the construction of the Gorky Hydroelectric Power Station in the 1950s, the need to protect the city from flooding became more acute. The executive committee decided to demolish 13 residential and 33 outbuildings on the Embankment, affecting most buildings, depriving them of basements, and changing the city's appearance. The work to strengthen the slopes of the Volga and level the Embankment required significant effort. The work to protect the city included filling basements and leveling the embankment. This required a huge amount of sand and gravel, which was extracted in the vicinity of the city. The Levitan House-Museum significantly changed its appearance. Its first floor was completely filled in.

The work was completed by the end of 1957. As a result of the reconstruction, the level of the Volga in the Plyos area rose by 8 meters, the embankment was leveled, trees were planted along it, and the Volga boulevard was created, as we see it today. Undoubtedly, thanks to the leveled embankment, the view of Plyos from the Volga has become significantly more attractive!
