The museum occupies the old house of the Groshevs and Podgornovs. This majestic brick mansion, built in the early 19th century, is itself a monument of architecture. Its facade, facing the embankment, is adorned with pilasters and arched windows, and the interiors retain elements of classical style, giving the museum a special atmosphere.
The museum opened in 1997. The main exhibition covers the work of outstanding Russian landscape painters of the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. Here are works by masters such as Alexei Savrasov, Ivan Shishkin, Vasily Polenov, Alexei Bogolyubov, and many others. These paintings reflect the formation and development of the Russian landscape school, its various directions and styles.
Special attention is given to the work of the "Union of Russian Artists", where you can see works by Nikolai Klodt, Vasily Perepletchikov, and others. Friends and students of Isaac Levitan, such as Manuel Aladjalov, Stanislav Zhukovsky, Vasily Baksheev, are also widely represented in the exhibition. Levitan's paintings can be seen in the Memorial House-Museum of the Artist, which is just a five-minute walk from the Landscape Museum.
In addition to the works of 19th-century artists, the museum showcases works from the Soviet period. Paintings by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Lydia Brodskaya, Nikolai Krymov, and other masters allow visitors to trace the evolution of landscape painting during Soviet times.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions that bring works from other museums, private collections, and its own funds. This makes each visit to the museum unique, allowing visitors to discover new facets of art.
The house where the museum is located is depicted in Isaac Levitan's famous painting "Evening. Golden Plyos". Levitan, who lived here for some time, left a significant mark on the history of the house and the town. An interesting episode is associated with the escape of Anna Grosheva, the young wife of merchant Xenophon Groshev, inspired by Levitan and his companion Sofia Kuvshinnikova. This incident became the basis for the story "Razvivately" by writer Severtsev-Polilov.
