Main Venue of the City's Cultural Life

The Levitan Cultural Center is the main venue for cultural and public events in Plyos. The building, a 19th-century architectural monument, was reconstructed in 2011-2012 and has since become a multifunctional venue actively used for organizing festivals, concerts, exhibitions, performances, conferences, and other significant events. The center features a transformer hall, which, thanks to its modular design, can adapt to any event needs, whether film screenings, literary and musical evenings, or large forums.

The hall accommodates more than 150 people and is equipped with modern lighting and sound equipment, making it an ideal place for events of various scales. The center's space includes two exhibition areas and a stage space, allowing for multiple cultural events to be held simultaneously. The cultural center also offers its premises for rent to third-party organizations, providing comfortable conditions for off-site seminars, ceremonial events, and entertainment programs. Today, it regularly hosts such iconic events as the “Plyos on the Volga. Linen Palette” festival, the International Film Festival “Mirror,” the Shalyapin Country Festival, and the “Green Noise” plein air.

History of the Building

The building that today houses the Levitan Cultural Center has a rich and eventful history that begins in the first half of the 19th century. Built in the late classical style, it was originally part of the educational infrastructure of Plyos. In the early 20th century, the house belonged to the zemstvo chief Mikhail Viktorovich Marin, and in 1907 it was acquired by the Plyos merchant and manufacturer Grigory Klementyevich Gorbunov, who donated it to the city society. Thanks to his generosity and investments in repairs, the building was adapted to accommodate a women's school and a children's shelter.

During Soviet times, the building underwent several changes in function: it briefly housed a school and then an orphanage, whose graduates still remember their years spent within these walls and sometimes return to Plyos to visit the place that became part of their childhood.

The reconstruction carried out in 2011-2012 with the support of a charitable foundation breathed new life into the building, preserving its historical appearance and giving it new cultural significance.
