  • Flight Over Plyos

Levitan Hill in Plyos is one of the most picturesque places in the city. Once you reach the top of the hill, a breathtaking view of the Volga and its surrounding expanses unfolds before you. This place, as if painted by Levitan himself, enchants with its tranquility and calmness.

Climbing the hill is a special challenge that is rewarded with magnificent panoramic views. The staircase leading up is long and steep, but along the way, there are resting spots where you can catch your breath and enjoy the surrounding nature. The experience of climbing is heightened when, upon reaching the summit, you see the Volga stretching to the horizon and the city of Plyos spread out along its banks. The hill rises about 50 meters above the Volga. Such a height gives the sensation of flying on wings over Plyos.

It's no wonder that Levitan found his inspiration here. They say that upon seeing these views, he immediately realized that Plyos would become his creative haven. Indeed, Levitan Hill, like all of Plyos, seems made for an artist to capture all the shades of Russian nature.

  • Plyos immediately enchanted us, and we decided to stay

Isaac Levitan first arrived in Plyos in the spring of 1888 during a journey along the Volga in search of new subjects for his paintings. On his way to Yaroslavl, he noticed from the deck of a steamboat a majestic hill with a small church on top. This view so struck the artist that he made a spontaneous decision to make an unscheduled stop. Levitan felt that it was here, in Plyos, that he could find his inspiration and capture on canvas the harmony of nature and spirituality he sought.

Plyos became a place where Levitan's talent fully blossomed. Along with the artist came his close friend Sofia Kuvshinnikova, whose stories about the time spent in Plyos still vividly convey the atmosphere of that period. “We finally reached Plyos. It immediately enchanted us, and we decided to stay.” They rented a small house in the center of Plyos, where Levitan worked tirelessly, creating numerous studies and paintings. Sofia Petrovna recalled how Levitan would wander the surroundings for hours, observing the play of light and shadow, studying nature. She noted that it was in Plyos that he found what he lacked in other places — peace, tranquility, and strength, which he transferred to his canvases.

One of the key works created in Plyos was the painting "Above Eternal Peace," which forever cemented Levitan's status as a master of landscape art. The view of the church on the hill, which Levitan saw during his first visit to Plyos, became the basis for this masterpiece. The painting embodies not only the beauty of nature but also a deep philosophical reflection on life and death, time and eternity. It is believed that the painting "Above Eternal Peace" is the "most Russian" of all paintings ever created on a Russian theme.

Levitan's stay in Plyos had a huge impact on the development of the city. Thanks to his paintings, Plyos became known throughout Russia, transforming from a small provincial town into a cultural and tourist destination. The hill where he saw the church now bears his name and is a symbol of Plyos, a place of pilgrimage for artists and art lovers.

Thus, Levitan and Plyos are connected by an unbreakable thread, and Levitan Hill has become not only a source of inspiration for the artist but also an important part of the history of Russian painting, inspiring generations of artists to create their masterpieces.

In memory of the creative years Levitan spent in this small town on the banks of the Volga, a sculptural complex was installed on the top of the hill in 2012. It represents a bronze figure of the artist, in whose features the images of the great Russian landscape painter Isaac Levitan can be recognized, captured at the easel in the process of creating the famous painting "Over Eternal Rest".

  • Church "Over Eternal Rest"

When Isaac Levitan first visited Plyos in 1888, he was struck by the view from one of the local heights. At the top of this hill stood a modest wooden Church of Saints Peter and Paul, surrounded by an ancient cemetery. This church immediately caught the artist's attention with its simplicity and the way it harmoniously fit into the surrounding landscape. Levitan, inspired by this scene, decided to stay in Plyos.

The history of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul dates back to the 16th century when a cemetery and a wooden temple were located on this site. It was built in 1748. The church was an example of traditional wooden architecture with simple architecture typical of the Russian North. Unfortunately, in 1903, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul burned down, leaving only memories and Levitan's paintings that captured it. One such painting was "The Wooden Church in Plyos at the Last Rays of the Sun," created in the same year, 1888.

Almost 80 years later, in 1982, the Church of the Resurrection of Christ from the village of Bilyukovo was moved to the site of the lost Church of Saints Peter and Paul. This wooden church, built in 1699, is also an example of traditional Russian architecture. During the restoration and relocation under the guidance of architect Alexander Opolovnikov, its architectural features and partially its interiors were restored.

The Resurrection Church became a continuation of the history of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, preserving the spirit and atmosphere of old Plyos. Located on Levitan Hill, it organically blended into the surrounding landscape, complementing it with its unique architectural expressiveness, and has now become the church "Over Eternal Rest".
