Main Attractions of Plyos

Cathedral Hill is the heart, the historical center, and one of the most iconic places in the city. The hill rises 55 meters above the Volga, offering stunning panoramic views of the river and surroundings. Most tourists begin their journey in Plyos from Cathedral Hill. This place is not only famous for its views but is also rich in historical events and monuments, whose roots go back to the founding of Plyos.

The embankment is the main street of Plyos, stretching for 3 kilometers along the Volga, making it the perfect place for leisurely strolls. Its landscaping is carefully thought out: a gentle slope allows easy access to the water, and comfortable benches are placed along the paths, sheltered in the shade of trees. Walking here, you can enjoy picturesque views of the river and green hills, where boats, steamships, and yachts sail by. Merchant mansions, painted in pastel shades and lined up along the embankment, have retained elements of ancient architecture and, after restoration, have turned into cozy hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops.

One of the most picturesque places that inspired Isaac Levitan to create his masterpieces. Here, the artist first saw the ancient Peter and Paul Church, surrounded by an old cemetery, which inspired him to stop in Plyos. Climbing to the top, you will be greeted by a breathtaking view of the Volga and the city, cozily nestled on its banks.

The main museum of the city is the memorial house-museum of the great Russian artist Isaac Levitan. The museum's exhibition consists of three halls displaying paintings by Levitan and his friends, personal belongings of the artists, a brief biography, and household items of that time.

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ, located on Levitan Hill, is a striking example of Russian wooden architecture. Moved from the village of Bilyukovo in 1982, this church serves as an important cultural and historical monument. It replaced the ancient Church of Peter and Paul, which stood on this site until the early 20th century.

The "Fish Corner" is a unique triangular pie filled with smoked bream, which has become a symbol of Plyos and gained great popularity among city guests. This fast-food format allows you to easily combine the first and second courses while enjoying a walk along the beautiful Volga river embankment.

A river cruise is an essential part of the tourist program. In 40-50 minutes, you can enjoy views of the picturesque banks of the Volga from the Milovka estate to the ruins of the old brick factory. Magnificent landscapes with seven hills, ancient churches, and merchant mansions are accompanied by an audio tour. The ship is equipped with a closed salon, a restroom, and an open deck. The route length is 5 kilometers. From the water, Plyos reveals its utmost splendor.

On the Plyos embankment, there is a touching monument to a cat named Mukha. This small concrete sculpture depicts a thoughtful cat gazing at the smooth surface of the Volga River. Its story is filled with love, tragedy, and deep attachment to pets.

The only Landscape Museum in Russia. The permanent exhibition features authentic works by landscape artists from the second half of the 19th to the early 20th century. There is always one or several temporary art exhibitions from other museums, private collections, or its own funds.

The monument to Fyodor Chaliapin on the Volga embankment depicts the great opera singer as a simple summer resident sitting on a boat. Created by sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov, the monument commemorates Chaliapin's visit to Plyos in 1910 and his love for the local landscapes, which prompted him to purchase a plot of land near Plyos. The monument has become part of the cultural revival and a reminder of Chaliapin's close connection to this picturesque corner of Russia.

The Church of Saint Barbara the Great Martyr is one of the outstanding examples of Orthodox architecture, located on an elevation near the banks of the Volga and at the foot of the picturesque Levitan Mountain. This church, built in the Classicism style, not only serves as an important cultural and spiritual center of the city but is also a landmark element of its architectural landscape.

The museum, based on a private collection, showcases a variety of artworks, including Russian and Ukrainian porcelain, Western European miniatures in the "nude" style, lacquer miniatures, and more. Each exhibition reflects unique aspects of cultural heritage, from mythological plots to realistic portraits and folk themes, creating a comprehensive view of artistic traditions and craftsmanship from different eras.

The museum, located in a historic building on Cathedral Hill, presents an exhibition that introduces the history of the Ivanovo region from ancient times to the 17th century. In five vaulted halls, archaeological finds are displayed, including women's jewelry from the 7th century, arrowheads, chainmail, and armor, as well as cult stones used in pagan rituals. The exhibition includes anthropological reconstructions, models of ancient fortresses, and a virtual fitting room that allows visitors to "try on" ancient Russian costumes or armor, immersing them in the atmosphere of the distant past.

The stone Resurrection Church, built in 1817 in honor of the victory over the French in the Patriotic War of 1812. In the 19th century, it was the center of the city's spiritual life, where services and celebrations were held. After the October Revolution, the church was closed and used for household needs, but in 1961, an art gallery was opened here. In 1990, the church was returned to the faithful and restoration began. Today, the church is active again, its domes shining with gold, and a wooden chapel of Archangel Michael is installed nearby. The Resurrection Church is an important cultural object, often depicted on postcards and in films.
