No Cars Allowed in the City

You will not be allowed to enter Plyos with a personal car unless you have a hotel reservation. There is a checkpoint with a barrier at the main entrance to the city, and other entrances are blocked by concrete barriers.

Due to the high volume of cars during the tourist season and the limited number of parking spaces in the historic part of the city, the administration has decided to restrict car traffic.

Tourists are encouraged to leave their cars at one of several large parking lots and walk to the tourist locations.

Read more about this restriction and see an interactive map of parking lots and barriers on a separate page.

Plyos is a Pedestrian Town + Elevation Changes

The area of Plyos is only 3 km², and all the attractions can be easily explored on foot. A car is unnecessary in this town, and there are more pedestrians than cars on the roads.

Plyos is well-prepared for walking tours. There are many benches throughout the town; shops, kiosks, and cafes are open where you can buy water and snacks; there are shaded areas to escape the sun.

The main attractions are located on the hills of Plyos, which locals call mountains, such as Cathedral Hill and Levitan Hill. Their height above the Volga is about 60 meters, and it takes some effort to climb up or down them. Levitan Hill has a convenient staircase, while Cathedral Hill only has a stone path. Therefore, we do not recommend wearing high heels for ladies.

If you leave your car at the parking lot at the entrance to the town and walk all day, you might get tired, and the climb back up to the parking lot might be too much. Try to find the white electric buses with the sign "Plyos Taxi," which can take you to the parking lot for 100 rubles per person. Or call a taxi at +7 (901) 289-89-53

Few Toilets

There are very few public toilets in the city! In fact, there is only one, located at the Trade Square in the city center (behind the souvenir shop).

Toilets are available in restaurants and museums, but there is a high chance you will be asked for a receipt or ticket to be allowed in. So don't miss the opportunity to use the restroom in a restaurant, especially with children!

Budget Extra Money

Plyos is not a cheap city. A good hotel room starts at 8,000 rubles. A full family meal costs several thousand rubles. A riverboat ride is 400 rubles per person, and a motorboat ride starts at 2,000 rubles. Museums and exhibitions start at 200 rubles per ticket.

Besides this, you'll find many souvenirs and activities in Plyos, with prices significantly marked up. We recommend bringing extra money.

Book Hotels in Nearby Cities

Finding available hotel rooms in Plyos is not easy. Hotels here are booked several months in advance, and finding a room "for tomorrow" is almost impossible. There is an option to find accommodation in nearby cities. The largest neighboring cities are Privolzhsk, Kostroma, and Ivanovo. Hotels in these cities will be significantly cheaper than in Plyos!

Many People

Plyos is a very popular tourist town. It ranks among the top four most visited small towns in Russia. With a local population of about 1,900 people, it attracts around 1 million tourists annually, according to various estimates!

On weekends, the town is very crowded. There are long lines for the riverboat and in stores, a continuous stream of people on the promenade, and finding a free table in a restaurant can be difficult.

Don't Rush

You can see Plyos in 2 hours, but it won't be the Plyos you've heard so much about! You'll miss many interesting details that will form your positive impression of the trip.

Ideally, it's better to plan for several days and quietly stroll through the streets with a local guide who will share interesting stories with you. But if that's not possible, stay in Plyos for at least one night. Enjoy the silence, tranquility, and beauty that surround these places. Walk at your leisure, don't rush to see everything everywhere, and maybe then, you'll find more!

Do Not Buy Fish on the Street or from Cars

One of the main tourist souvenirs in Plyos is smoked fish. We have no doubt that you will try it here in one form or another! But remember, do not buy fish that is stored openly on the street, especially on a hot summer day.

Explore Interesting Places and Activities. There Are Many!

Explore all the attractions, museums, churches, exhibitions. And if you're looking for active recreation, check out the selection of activities.

Plyos offers a wide range of leisure and entertainment options for everyone. Try exploring interesting places to make your trip better!
